Press Release Wheel Maker Online has been updated! May 16, 1999 -- Crazy Rides Site Development Wheel Maker Online version 99.05.16 is an interactive page written using Microsoft® Visual Basic Script with DHTML that will allow users to calculate spoke lengths online. Functionality is very similar to the Wheel Maker software product available for download. The layout is setup to enable a printout of the completed calculation on two pages. This web page was updated using Microsoft® FrontPage 2000 and Visual Basic Script. New features include a much smaller download size of only 29kb as compared to the 73kb of the previous version. The difference is the missing ActiveX controls, we used the Microsoft® ActiveX Control Pad to layout the original page and get the precise positioning we desired. This required the ActiveX Control Pad also be available on the client machine, now a 6mb download. We found this acceptable at the time since Internet Explorer 3 included ActiveX Control Pad with every installation. Well the ActiveX Control Pad has been dropped from favor,
and replaced with DHTML. …..Which means it is no
longer included with the newer versions of Internet Explorer which
causes the needed files to be downloaded when first visiting the page.
Not very nice. This new version of Wheel Maker Online does not require any extra downloads to work and is extremely light. Although now it is only supported by Internet Explorer versions 4 and 5, we feel it was well worth the effort to modify. Internet Explorer 3 users will be automatically redirected to the older version. A version for Netscape's browser has been considered and dismissed because of the extra effort needed, we would have to create an entirely new version of Wheel Maker Online. Until these two browsers close the gaps in their differences we will favor the Microsoft browser only.
